(Not) The Bible

” . . . when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh in you that believe.” 1 Thes. 2:13

The History Channel’ s mini-series, “The Bible” has created plenty of excitement. It has been endorsed by a number of high profile personalities within the professing church and many Christians wonder how anyone could be critical of anything that might bring positive attention to God or the Bible. But the more important question that must be asked about this mini-series is, “Is it Biblical”? By that I mean, is it true to Scripture? The answer is no. There are many discrepancies between what viewers are seeing on television and the Biblical record. The following link lists a few.

Some say it doesn’t matter. After all, isn’t anything that causes people to consider God and His word in a favorable light good? Again, the answer is no. The Bible is the inspired, inerrant, infallible, Word of God. In His Word God has revealed exactly what He has intended to reveal and said exactly what He has intended to say. Omissions are not merely artistic license they are sin. Attempts to portray God in any way other than He has revealed Himself in Scripture are blasphemous and very serious. As Christians we cannot turn a blind eye to discrepancies between the Word of God and a television program claiming to be an accurate representation of the Bible anymore than we would defend a sermon that was contrary to Scripture. Either it is Bible or it’s not. The Word of God is not a novel written by men which can be edited to fit the preferences of an audience. It is God breathed and every word, every detail is important. If you really want a good Bible story that you can trust why not turn off the television and pick up your own copy of God’s inspired, infallible, inerrant, Word. It is complete and it is sufficient.
